In September 2021, for the first time in Poland, intercity quantum cryptographic key distribution (QKD) link was established. The QKD signal transmitter was located at the Quantum Photonics Laboratory at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw (UW). Optical quantum signal via the University of Warsaw fiber-optic network and the PIONIER network was transmitted to the receiver located in the PIONIER network node in Sochaczew operated by the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC). After establishing a connection between devices on the quantum channel and on the classic channel, the generation of cryptographic keys was obtained using the QKD protocol. The achievement is the result of cooperation between teams from UW and PSNC. It is an important step towards the construction of the target QKD link between Warszawa and Poznań.
