On June 22, we will organize a workshop on quantum cryptography (link to the event and registration webpage), during which scientists working within the National Laboratory for Photonics and Quantum Technologies and invited representatives of science and industry from abroad will present the physical foundations of the quantum key distribution (QKD), as well as the current state of development, perspectives and challenges facing this technology. The topics of the workshop will be directly related to the infrastructure built as a part of the Quantum Technology Laboratory, in particular optical links for secure data transmission.

The workshop will start on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 12:00 and will have a hybrid form. In addition to the online transmission, in one of the lecture halls of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw participants will be able to attend live lectures by speakers from the University of Warsaw and watch transmitted lectures of other speakers.

The speakers will include scientists and employees of European telecommunications companies actively involved in the creation of secure networks based on the QKD technology:

Eleni Diamanti (Quantum Information Team, Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris 6, Sorbonne Université, Paris Center for Quantum Computing, France)

Eleni Diamanti will introduce concepts of the second quantum revolution, as well as principles and challenges of the quantum communication (different technologies and approaches: single-photon transmission and detection). Moreover, introduction to quantum cryptography and QKD will be presented.

Andreas Poppe (Austrian Institute of Technology, Austria)

Andreas Poppe will present the basics of the QKD technology and aspects of its implementation and standardization. The OPENQKD project, the pilot of the European Commission’s EuroQCI initiative will be also discussed.

Robert Woodward (Toshiba Europe Limited, Cambridge Research Laboratory)

Robert Woodward will present the TOSHIBA Europe Limited company and its Quantum Key Dsitribution Systems.

Pejman Panahi (IDQuantique, Switzerland)

Pejman Panahi will present the IDQ company, its projects, products and approach to quantum cryptography.

Marc Geitz (Deutsche Telekom, Germany)

Marc Geitz will present the QKD technology testbed built in Berlin as a part of the OPENQKD project. 5G use-cases and preliminary results will be discussed.

Vicente Martin (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain)

Vicente Martin will present the QKD technology testbed in Madrid built as a part of the OPENQKD project in cooperation between the Technical University in Madrid and the TELEFONICA network operator. 5G and SDN use-cases and preliminary results will be discussed.

Michał Jachura (Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw)

Michał Jachura will discuss physical aspects of secure communication with a special focus on free-space quantum cryptography. He will also give a brief overview of a booming field of satellite optical communication and will present ongoing European initiatives dedicated to secure optical communication technologies such as EuroQCI and HydRON.

Piotr Rydlichowski (Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center, Poland)

Piotr Rydlichowski will present works carried out at the PSNC related to the QKD technology as part of the NLPQT, QUAPITAL and OPENQKD projects. The test environment, applications and operational use of the QKD technology will be discussed.

Moreover, Adam Widomski and Michał Karpiński (Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw) will present the achievements and plans for further work in the field of quantum information under the NLPQT project.
