The system enables automated measurements of chromatic dispersion and group refractive index of optical fibers in the spectral range from 450 to 3400 nm for the fundamental mode and from 450 to 1800 nm for higher-order modes thanks to application of a spatial light modulator (SLM). The white light interference method was used for measurement of chromatic dispersion resulting in the accuracy of the order of a few ps/km/nm. The setup allows to characterize fibers with a step or gradient refractive index profile, as well as structured fibers (microstructured, with elliptical core and stress-applying elements), including birefringent fibers with linear, elliptical or circular birefringence. A fiber length of between 20 and 200 cm is required to conduct the measurement. In addition, the system allows for broadband measurements of birefringence and ellipticity of fiber eigenmodes.
